The PNB (basic navigation skipper) and the PER (recreational boat skipper) are two nautical titles that allow you to take boats of certain characteristics and to go a certain distance away from the coast.
One of the main differences between these two qualifications is that the PER has a broader remit than the PNB.
The main differences between these two degrees are as follows:
- The PNB allows you to carry motor boats of up to 8 metres in length with no limit on engine power, while the PER allows you to carry boats of up to 15 metres in length, also with no limit on engine power.
- Another difference is the distance, up to where you can sail, with the PNB you can sail up to 5 miles from the coast, while with the PER you can sail up to 12 miles from the coast.
- Both the PNB and the PER whose training starts from scratch, the only thing that changes is that the PER is of longer duration, since the nautical chart is studied, which allows to acquire more attributions and, therefore, the syllabus will be a little higher than the PNB.
In conclusion, we recommend taking the PER, as with a little more determination and effort the permitted ratings increase and you will be able to enjoy sailing more.
