Fauna and flora of the Medes Islands

The Medes Islands are an archipelago located in the Mediterranean Sea, just 1 km off the coast of L’Estartit. This archipelago was protected in 1983 by an order of the Generalitat de Catalunya and in 2010 it was declared a protected national natural park due to its great wealth of fauna and flora, both marine and terrestrial. This archipelago is characterised by its magnificent seabed, where the remains of shipwrecks and sunken Greek ships have been found, a seabed much appreciated by scuba divers.

One of the most outstanding activities are the boat trips, as in this way you can admire the underwater richness of the islands and discover idyllic places. An aquatic propulsion device, ideal for exploring the seabed at high speed and going down to a depth of up to 40 metres.

AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT

• Reserve effect fish: Grouper, sea bream, sea bass, etc.
• Pelagic predators: Spiny dogfish, redfish and tuna.
• Coralligenous communities: Red gorgonians, red coral, etc.
• Molluscs: Nacras, date mussels, etc.
• Cattaceans: Bottlenose dolphins.

These islands are considered to be the best natural reserve in the western Mediterranean, thanks to their great wealth of marine fauna and flora.
